Writing for magazines?

(For a living.) Everyone says it's possible but everytime I try to find info. online all i get is tips, not the magazines you can actually write for. if you look at The New Yorker, The Paris Review or any other magazine, there will always be different authors in each issue. so i don't understand, how can you do it for a living unless you are a columnist? Of course you can submit to various magazines, but even if your article is great, they go for different authors. So I don't get it, how can you make a living out of it? If you know more about this, could you please share. Thanx a lot.
