Inexpensive alternative to fireplace gl?

I'd really like to replace our ceramic gas logs with a gl fire pit look in my living room......my question is this: is there an inexpensive alternative to what seems to be a $500 proposition right now? Will any kind of gl work? Will ground up granite work? Any ideas are appreciated.
