How to attach a pickguard?

I recently bought an acoustic guitar but of course the pickguard comes unattached. What I want to know is how do I get it on. Someone told me that I'm supposed to screw it in but I'd rather use an adhesive. I have no idea what kind of adhesive to use either.I don't really intend to ever remove it. Thanks
