How do I get dual American-Canadian citizenship?

My company has recently expanded by buying an American company. My HR department informs me that a dual citizenship would help my future endeavors within the company. What is the best course of action for going this route. Are there any pitfalls that a person should avoid? I would like to make the process as painless as possible.
